Agreement, 1560, October 14. 2 Elizabeth I.

Agreement between the Right Honorable George, earl of Shrewsbury, and Edward Savile, esq, son and heir of Sir Henry Savile, knight, deceased, witnessing that whereas the said Edward Savile by deed indented bearing date of 12 June, 1 Elizabeth [1559] granted to the said earl of Shrewsbury by the name of George Talbott, knight, lord Talbott, one annuity of £100 to be levied out of his manor of Thornhill and Tankerley (Yorks.) - this indenture made between the Right Honorable George Talbott, knight, lord Talbott of Hamesworth (Yorks.) and Edward Savile in consideration of the good benevolence to him before this time of the said lord Talbot doth grant to the said lord one annuity of £100 proceeding from his manor of Thornhill and Tankersley (Yorks.), with covenant against late payment and distraint; in consideration of which the said lord Talbott of his cost and charge "shall funde with meites, drynkes, and lodgyng" the said Edward Savile and 4 or 5 of his man servants and his wife and her maid, to come and be with the lord Talbot; and he shall find grass for 3 or 4 nags or geldings in summer and in winter, hay, provender, and stabling; and moreover the said lord Talbot shall entertain as becometh him all such friends of Edward Savile "as shall happen to come see and make mery with same Edward at any time." Now it appears that the said Edward Savile "by the forme of the canonyical lawes of this realme is lawfully devorsed and separated from his wife which he then hadd and is not amynded as to get mary any other woman and willyng and desirous to be in household and stayed with the said earl" shall grant him the annuity of £100 and in return the earl shall grant him livlihood [as above] so long as they shall live together.
